This project was developed as part of a module on speculative exhibition design. It involved examining, interpreting and reimagining the ‘unclassified’ group of objects from the SKKG collection. The objects in the collection served as inspiration for new and experimental narratives.
Together with Nevin Goetschmann and Rebecca De Bautista I have created one part of the exhibition «Disc with a Hole». It explored, in a playful and accessible way, how we as humans organise our perceptions through categorisation. The starting point was a collection of formally similar objects, which were grouped under a neutral label and stripped of their original function in order to shift the focus onto comparison, classification and perception. In doing so, categorisation was made visible as a fundamental, mostly unconscious thought process and critically reflected upon. A scientific approach was ironically exaggerated whilst simultaneously made accessible to a wider audience.

Visitors were actively involved: they analysed, compared and measured the objects, identified similarities and differences, and developed their own classification systems. This created an interactive space that encouraged visitors to question familiar patterns of thought and conveyed scientific practices in a playful way.
